Passage 06- Homegrown Training

Because of coronavirus, we were forbidden from this point on to meet in churches.  As a workaround, we found a pastor who arranged for me to teach in a house.  He had managed to gather 17 hungry students who desired to hear the Word of God.  I would meet them from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm for the next three days, in the arranged home.

Home fellowships were common in the First Century church.  They are mentioned in Acts 2:46; 5:42; 8:3; 12:12; 20:20 and 28:30.  The constant persecution going on at that time made it necessary for the believers to meet in private homes rather than public church buildings.

This group was the most enthusiastic to hear God’s Word of any I had encountered so far in Rwanda.  After teaching each subject, I would ask them if they desired to take a break.  They would either say “No” or else they would only want a quick “stand up and stretch” break.  Or maybe 5 minutes.  Then they would be eager for me to teach them something else.

At the end of the first day, I gave them a list of five different topics that I could teach the following day.  I asked them, “Which one of these five would you like me to teach tomorrow?”  Many of them responded, “I want you to teach all of them.”  I shook my head in near disbelief.  They were so excited to hear everything I could possibly enlighten them with during our last two days together.

On my second day I was given a new translator named Theo.  I have had a lot of translators over the years.  Theo was the best I ever had.  It wasn’t just that he clearly understood my English.  What stood him out from the rest was his enthusiasm and passion for translating.  He was genuinely hungry to hear what I was teaching.  The words coming from my mouth filled his heart with great excitement and joy.  He then communicated that joy to the audience.  He was remarkable in that way.

At times he would see that the audience wasn’t quite understanding the translation.  In those instances, he would take the time to explain my message to them more clearly.  After he was sure they understood, he would motion me to continue.  It was obvious that he had a special God-given gift for doing translation work.  He was a humble man as well.

At the first break, he asked to speak to me privately.  We went outside and he opened his heart up to me, telling me about the vision God had given him to reach people of Islamic faith.  He also has a good singing voice.  When I told him that I was planning to travel to Muslim countries such as Pakistan, he was very excited.

His home and job were more than an hour away.  However, two days ago he had been laid off from his job because of coronavirus and decided to visit his relative who lived close to our teaching location.  Somehow, he found out about my need for a translator.  Without knowing anything about me or my ministry, he volunteered.

Meeting him seemed too improbable for it to have been coincidence.  At the close of our first two days together, we swapped contact information.  It may be that God has in mind for us to do future ministry together.

I spent three full days with this new team.  Each day the scheduled lunch did not arrive until after 2:00 pm.  That meant that, except for the 15-minute discussion group activity each day, I was teaching from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm with only a few 5-minute breaks.  By the time 2:00 pm rolled around, I was completely drained of all energy.  But it was well worth it.  These people were so hungry.  They drew the Word of God right out of me.  And now it belonged to them.  My prayers were that it would strengthen their walk with our Lord Jesus Christ in great and wonderful ways.

And every day, in the temple and at home, they did not cease to teach and to proclaim the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.

Acts 5:42  REV

how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and from house to house,
testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and trust toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Acts 20:20-21  REV

And he stayed two whole years in his own rented house, and welcomed everyone who came to him,
preaching the Kingdom of God, and teaching the things about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.
